SPIN BOWLS

THROUGH AN EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH I AIMED TO UNDERSTAND HOW 2-DIMENSIONAL COPPER SHEETS WERE MANIPULATED INTO 3-DIMENSIONAL FORMS DURING THE METAL SPINNING PROCESS. TO MAP THIS TRANSFORMATION, VARIOUS GRID PATTERNS WERE ACID ETCHED ONTO COPPER SHEETS. THE SHEETS WERE THEN SPUN IN DIFFERENT ORIENTATIONS, USING VARIOUS FORMS. ON THE RESULTING 3-DIMENSIONAL OBJECTS THE GRID HAD BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO “MOVEMENT MAPS” PROVIDING A VISUAL EVIDENCE OF THE MATERIAL’S PATH TO 3-DIMENSIONALITY. THE EXPERIMENTS ALSO YIELDED AN UNEXPECTED RESULT OF PATTERN TRANSFERENCE, WHERE THE GRID ARTICULATED ONTO THE INSIDE OF THE FORM WHEN THE COPPER WAS SPUN ETCHING SIDE OUT. THE APPLICATION OF THIS PROCESS PROVIDES NEW POSSIBILITIES WITHIN THE METAL SPINNING PROCESS.
