SPIN BOWLS
SPIN BOWLS USE AN INNOVATIVE FABRICATION PROCESS TO MAP THE TRANSFORMATION OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL SURFACES INTO THREE-DIMENSIONAL FORMS THROUGH THE PROCESS OF METAL SPINNING. VARIOUS GRID PATTERNS ARE ACID ETCHED ONTO COPPER SHEETS, WHICH ARE THEN SPUN INTO BOWLS USING SUITABLE FORMS. AS THE FLAT SHEETS BECOME FORMED OBJECTS, THE GRID PATTERNS BECOME MOVEMENT MAPS THAT PROVIDE A VISUAL RECORD OF THE MATERIAL'S PATH TO THREE DIMENSIONALITY. AS AN UNEXPECTED FEATURE OF THIS NEW FABRICATION PROCESS, ETCHED PATTERNS CAN TRANSFER FROM ONE SIDE OF THE COPPER SHEET TO THE OTHER: WHEN THE ETCHED SURFACE BECOMES THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOWL, THE GRID PATTERN IS TRANSFERRED TO THE INSIDE OF THE BOWL AS THE METAL IS SPUN INTO ITS FINAL SHAPE.
